Adventures in (not really) being a Pinterest mom

Hera help me, I've decided to try to sew.

In a fit of domesticity, I've made good on my decision to try to make my kids' halloween costumes when I can.  This year, Calliope is putting me to the test.  She wants to be a Cake for Halloween.

EDIT: Ok so I kinda skipped the documenting it part - BUT! I successfully made Callie an Orange Layer Cake Costume for Halloween!  See???

Materials are mostly felt, some interfacing, and some plumbing tubes.  It essentially functions like a hoop skirt, so she can sit, stand, run, jump, climb stairs, and even be picked up and carried, completely unencumbered...I'm admittedly a little bit surprised and proud of the fact that I was able to engineer this design.  Everything I saw (mostly, yes, on Pinterest) wasn't practical or fun to wear (or easy to store!! This collapses down to a couple inches thick, the diameter of the base layer.  Easy peasy storage!) so I set off on my own to make this happen.  So glad I did, even if I'm not the best seamstress (and I broke every single one of my sewing machine needles in the process) because the kid's eyes lit up and she wore it all night with no complaints...she adored it, which made everyone adore it, which made her proud (she came up with being a cake - an orange cake - all on her own) and that in turn made me proud so...yeah, I may not be a Pinterest mom, but I am a slightly crazy and happy one.

Yu Web Development v. 2!

Long overdue, I finally have a new version of our web development site up and running. I need to decide what to do about compatibility - IE6 does not like my site - and I haven't had a chance to check it in IE 7 or 8, yet, but it seems pretty solid.

Let me know what y'all think!

New Layout v2.0

Okay, so it's not huge difference... I just switched the template over to Blogger's Custom Layout format. Previously, I'd done up the design in the classic template format since it was simpler. Hope it looks good, and we welcome any feedback.

New Look

As I alluded to a few days ago, Kate and I have been working on a new look for our blog. That new look has now been implemented, as you can probably see. I still need to work out a number of kinks... the biggest being that I had to go back to the classic template to make this work, but I liked the features our previous not-classic template offered. That, however, requires coding rather differently, and I haven't figured out how all that works yet. So, please, consider this a work in progress.

On the bright side, this new layout represents Kate and my first from-scratch layout. Kate and I worked together on design ideas in Photoshop, and then I used that design to create what you see here. This wasn't a perfect translation of our original idea, but yeah, work in progress and all that.

Hope you like it!
